Most Canadians researched Christmas gifts online

Nearly 8 out of 10 Canadians (76%) said they were going to conduct online research before heading out to the shops to buy their gifts for Christmas 2010, up 26% over 2009's figure, according to a recent study by Staples Canada and Angus Reid.

The survey's results suggest that the average Canadian consumer has started being smarter about the way they search for and buy gifts, and that the internet is not only seen as a great resource for learning about products but that it is also seen as a way to save time and money.

According to Craig Taylor, vice-president of e-commerce for Staples Canada, "If you are typically a last-minute shopper, you can find some great savings by shopping or researching online, while also saving some time hiking around stores."

While most Canadians decided to research their gift ideas online for Christmas 2010, 91% still planned to purchase their gifts in bricks-and-mortar stores after completing their initial internet research.

Staples therefore decided to take advantage of this by offering free delivery for orders of Can$50 placed online, and by offering a 110% price match guarantee. Popular items in the Staples gift lists included the Sony Reader Touch Edition and the Apple iPod Nano.

Staples operates stores in all provinces across Canada under the Staples Canada and Bureau en Gros banners, currently having over 13,500 employees and more than 320 stores.
